Roaming in the European Economic Area (EEA)
Roaming in the European Economic Area (EEA) is simple and costs the same as in Portugal. The EEA includes: the entire European Union, the French Caribbean, Réunion, Gibraltar, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Although the United Kingdom no longer belongs to the European Union, the same EEA roaming conditions still apply.
If your MEO plan includes voice and/or text calls to other national networks, the communications you make while roaming to Portugal or to EEA countries and the United Kingdom will be deducted from your free allowance.
Please note that
Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland are not European Economic Area countries. In these countries the
basic roaming plan will apply, according to the zone to which the respective countries belong, unless you choose to activate a
Roaming bundle for these destinations.
Communications on boats, airplanes and satellites are also not included in the European Economic Area.
Outside the European Economic Area, we recommend that you activate a Roaming bundle . If you don't want to use data, you can:
- Disable data roaming on your device;
- Change the roaming data limit link to FAQ Controlling data charges and other Roaming communications
- Opt out of roaming service on boats, planes and satellites FAQ link Use data service (internet) abroad
Using the internet while Roaming
Mobile Net traffic carried out in EEA countries and the United Kingdom is
deducted from the cap you have in Portugal. However, it may be subject to an
Acceptable Use Policy (PUR). If this policy applies to your plan , you will be notified by text when you reach 80% and 100% of the PUR data volume. Once the PUR is exhausted, the traffic consumed will continue to be deducted from your national ceiling, plus an amount per MB (see the
conditions for MEO customers or
MEO Empresas).
Check the conditions of your national plan on the my MEO App or website.
Calls, text and MMS not included in the cap made to EEA countries and the United Kingdom will be charged as for other national networks (the same as in Portugal).
Communications not included
Consult free of charge the information on Value Added Numbers, Access to Emergency Services and Public Alert Systems in the European Economic Area. This information is based on the content of public databases created and maintained by BEREC (Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications), based on data provided by the National Regulatory Authorities and/or Other Competent Authorities of each country in the European Economic Area.
Other roaming
If you have subscribed to another roaming plan, the respective conditions apply.
Roaming prevalence in the European Economic Area (EEA)
MEO can monitor roaming consumption for at least 4 months to check that roaming traffic and presence in the EEA and UK prevail, i.e. are higher than traffic and presence in Portugal and other countries outside the EEA and UK (>50%).
If this pattern continues after 2 weeks, MEO is entitled to charge a surcharge for traffic roaming in the EU, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and the United Kingdom, in accordance with the
Responsible Use Policy (RUP). ForMEO Empresas customers , see the
conditions.
