Roaming

  • How do I use mobile data while roaming?

With the roaming service, you can be abroad and use data on your mobile phone just like in Portugal. You can use email, the internet, apps and much more.
You will need to confirm that this function is active on your device. To do this, go to General Settings > Network > Roaming Data > Activate*.

If you have an internet traffic sharing card, you can use it abroad, the traffic used is billed to you according to your plan of Roaming.

To avoid incurring costs for software updates, we suggest that you check on your mobile phone that updates are only configured in WiFi mode:
    • Android*: General Settings > Device Information > Software Update > More Options > Automatic Update.
    • Apple: Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

You can also purchase " bundles " by roaming through theapp my MEO.

(*) There may be slight variations depending on the device model and operating system version. If in doubt, check the information in the device manual or on the brand's website.

Find out how you can control your data roaming costs.
  • How can I control my data and roaming call expenses?

    Manage Mobile Data Costs
To control consumption, we offer the data roaming control service, which is a free and automatic service (you don't need to activate it) that allows you to receive warning messages on your mobile phone when your expenses reach a certain amount (monthly limit).

The monthly limit for mobile data usage set at roaming for all customers customers is €50 + VAT (standard regulatory amount). You can change it online, in the app at my MEO, or on the website my MEO, or in the customer section ofMEO Empresas (if you are a customer MEO Empresas customer with a NIPC).

    This service works as follows:
    • When your monthly limit is about to run out, you'll receive a text alert.
    • When you reach the limit, you receive another text and, for security reasons, the data roaming service is suspended until the 1st of the following month.
    • To continue using the data until the end of the month in question, send "DATA" to 12083 (if the limit is 50€+VAT) or "UNLIMITED" (if it is higher).
    • If your limit is 50€+VAT and you ask to continue, the service will be suspended again when you reach 100€+VAT. You'll receive another warning when you're close to running out and when you reach that limit with instructions to continue (you'll have to send a message to 12083 with the word UNLIMITED).

You can disable the data usage control service at roaming for the current month, or change the maximum monthly data limit at Roaming —which will take effect only the following month—viathe app at my MEO, on the website at my MEO , or in the MEO Empresarial customer area (customer empresarial with NIPC).

    • Choose Services, choose the mobile phone for which you want to change the Roaming data control
    • Enter Roaming

    • Enter the maximum consumption limit you want and click Confirm.

Please be aware that in certain regions of maritime borders or in transit through airports, your mobile phone or data equipment may enter roaming unnoticed and register with a non-terrestrial operator.
If you want roaming communications barred on boats, planes and satellites, call +351 961 000 083 (from abroad) or 12 083 (Portugal), free of charge.

    Total Expense Control in roaming
MEO has the right to set a monthly limit of €150(1) for communications (voice, text and data) in Roaming. The verification and application of this limit by MEO will be made according to approximate values of the customer 's actual traffic and not the exact value of their communications, and MEO cannot be held responsible for the billing of communications that exceed the defined value. For MEO Empresas, the defined value is 1000€.
You will be notified via a warning message to your mobile phone when you have reached 50% and 100% of the reference limit.
If this value is reached, MEO will suspend the roaming service until the end of the current month. At the beginning of the following month, the roaming spending limit restarts.

(1)This amount is €250 for contracts with a direct debit payment method concluded on or after 01/01/2018. If direct debit payment is deactivated, the amount corresponding to the monthly limit for contracts without direct debit (€150) will apply. MEO will check/change the value of the limit every two weeks. For contracts prior to 22/3/2016, the limit is €500.

For more information or to change the monthly limit for roaming , callCustomer Support at customer (see the plan). If you are a customer MEO Empresas user, please call the Support Line at MEO Empresas (see plan).

Audible warning of calls not included in the monthly fee
If you are customer with pay-monthly tariffs or bundle with mobile phone, when you start a call and it is not included in your monthly fee, you will hear a beep. At the end of the call, you receive a message with the cost of the call you made.

Example of the text sent: " The communication you have just made, for the amount of Eur XX,XX (excluding VAT), is not included in your monthly fee or roaming bundle . + info dial *#123#."

The audible warning at the start of the call and text at the end of the call features are available automatically for communications that are charged to the monthly limit of roaming*.

*If the network operator with which your card is registered at roaming does not support real-time billing, you may not receive the audible alert. For more information, contact customer Support at Roaming (see the plan).
  • How to activate Roaming

    Prepaid cards, with top-ups:
On these cards, the automatic roaming is activeexcept on gift cards, where it will be activated after the 1st top-up. All communications made will be deducted from the card balance and if the card runs out of balance or expires, it will no longer work abroad.
Check the countries at Roaming; if the URL iscustomer MEO Empresas , check the coverage.

    Postpaid cards, billed service:
The Roaming service (both contract-based and automatic) is already active , and you don't need to do anything. All calls made to roaming (outside the country) are listed and billed on your invoice.
  • How do calls work when I am roaming?

    Making Roaming Calls

    • To call Portugal: Dial the + sign or 00 (zero zero), followed by the country code 351, and finally the phone number or mobile phone. For example, if you are abroad and want to call the number 960 000 000, dial: +351 960 000 000. To call a Portuguese mobile phone who is abroad, follow the same procedure. It’s just as if you were calling Portugal.

    • To call the country you are in: Dial the + sign or 00 (zero zero), followed by the country code of the country you are in, and finally the number you wish to call. For example, if you are in Spain and want to call the Madrid landline number 911 234 567, dial +34 911 234 567.

    • To call another country: Dial the + sign or 00 (zero zero), followed by the country code of the country you want to call, and finally the number you wish to reach. For example, if you are in France and want to call the Spanish number 123 456 789, which has the international code 34, dial: +34 123 456 789.

    Consult the international telephone codes.

    Receiving calls while Roaming

    • Voice calls and multimedia messages (MMS) received while roaming are paid for according to the basic roamingplan for the respective zones. If you are aMEO Empresas customer , see the basic roamingplan

    • Anyone who wants to call you or send you messages dials your number as normal and pays the same as if they were in Portugal. If you don't answer or your mobile phone is switched off, you can leave a voice message, as long as you have the voice mail service active. Receiving voice mail messages abroad will cost you money.

    Accessing voice mail while Roaming

Checking your voicemail at roaming is not free, as it is treated as a call made to Portugal. In the EEA, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom, it will be deducted from your plan allowance; or, if you do not have minutes included in your plan plan, you will be charged the rate for a call to other national networks.

In the rest of the world, this call will cost the same as a call to Portugal, according to the plan at Roaming. If the number is customer orMEO Empresas, please refer to theplan at roaming.

To access your voicemail at roaming, dial 200 or +351 60 followed by your mobile phone number, and press the call button.

To listen to your voicemail message, dial * and follow the voice prompts, which will ask you for your personal access code followed by # (unless you’ve changed it, your personal access code is the same as the original “ PIN ” on your card SIM). As a last resort (if all other options fail), dial +351 96 2000000 and follow the voice prompts, which will ask for your mobile phone number followed by your personal access code.

To deactivate voice mail when you're abroad, there are several ways you can do it before you travel. Do it through the menus on your mobile phone or by dialing one of these codes:

    • ##61# Call key - to cancel forwarding when you don't answer a call

    • ##62# Call button - to cancel call forwarding when your mobile phone is turned off or out of service

    • ##67# Call button — to cancel call forwarding when your line is busy

    • ##002# Call Button - to cancel call forwarding for all calls you do not receive, regardless of the reason.

  • How do I top up a pay as you go card pay as you go ?

If you have a plan pay as you go (for top-ups), the ideal thing to do is to check that you have enough before you travel and, if necessary, go to top-up. If you're already abroad, you can ask someone to set up top-up for you in Portugal, or opt for one of the following services:
    • Krédito: Request a €5 credit to continue using your mobile phone. Find out more about the Krédito service.
    • Temporary ContractualRoaming : If pay as you go have a pay as you go card and you run out of €10 in roaming, this temporary service allows you to continue using your mobile phone at will. We'll send you an invoice later to pay for what you've spent while you're abroad. To sign up for this service, send a text to 12083 with the word contractual. This service is only available for prepaid tariffs with the Automatic Roaming + Contractual option subscribed.

  • What happens when I am in a border area and my mobile phone foreign networks?

In certain regions near the borders with Zone 1 countries (the European Economic Area, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom), your mobile phone or data device may, without your realizing it, connect to a network in a country in a different zone, where the conditions that apply in Portugal do not apply.

Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland are not European Economic Area countries. In these countries the basic roamingplan will apply, according to the zone to which the respective countries belong, unless you choose to activate a Roamingbundle for these destinations.
If you're aMEO Empresas customer , check out the basic roamingplan .

To avoid unwanted roaming consumption, follow these steps:
    1. Check that you have active roaming . Here are some quick ways to do it:
       a. See if you have received a text from your operator informing you that you are roaming
       b. Confirm the name of the operator that appears in the top corner of the mobile phone screen.

    2. Suring the network manually
    • Android: Menu > Settings > Wireless and other > Mobile network > Operator > To select the manual network search, select the indicator to disable the function > Press "OK" to authorize the manual search > Select the desired operator > Press the home key and return to the start menu.
    • iOS*: Menu > Settings > Cellular > Network Selection > Turn off "Automatic" > Select the desired carrier > Press the Home button to return to the main menu.

    3. Alternatively, you can also temporarily disable the “ Roaming ” service in the appor on the website my MEO. If you are using “ customer ”MEO Empresas , disable it in the “ customer ” section atMEO Empresas. You can also call 12 083 (Portugal) or +351 961 000 083 (from abroad); the call is free.

(*) There may be slight variations depending on the device model and operating system version. If in doubt, check the information in the device manual or on the brand's website.
  • Roaming technologies and speeds in the European Economic Area

MEO must provide customers with habitual residence or stable ties to national territory, the service of roaming in the European Economic Area at the price of domestic tariffs and under conditions that are no less favorable than those offered in the domestic market, if the same generation of mobile communications networks, technologies and speeds are available on the visited network.

With regard to the use of the data service (both for the purposes of browsing web pages and using content, applications or services), the values indicated below do not constitute minimum levels of quality of service, since the download and upload speed at any given time depends on multiple factors, including: the speeds supported by the terminal equipment used; the amount of traffic being coursed in the area where the service is used; the coverage and topography in that area or location; use inside buildings; the number of simultaneous users; increased latency resulting from the distance between countries; the number of applications simultaneously running on the user's terminal equipment (firewall, antivirus, peer-to-peer applications, other sessions or applications competing with the internet session, etc.); the operating system and hardware and/or software configuration of the user's terminal equipment; the characteristics of the servers used and the capacity of the networks that interconnect these servers to the Internet; the capacity and/or availability of the networks of the partners of roaming and the international transit networks used, as well as the QoS control policies applied by these networks, which may result in service degradation at roaming, among other factors beyond MEO's control.

Estimating the maximum Internet access speed (in Mbps) at Roaming and for mobile accesses also depends on the factors listed above at any given time.

For more information about internet connection speeds, please see the Influencers Terms of Use.
