Technologies and speeds while Roaming in the European Economic Area

MEO must provide customers with habitual residence or stable ties to national territory, the service of roaming in the European Economic Area at the price of domestic tariffs and under conditions that are no less favorable than those offered in the domestic market, if the same generation of mobile communications networks, technologies and speeds are available on the visited network.

With regard to the use of the data service (both for the purposes of browsing web pages and using content, applications or services), the values indicated below do not constitute minimum levels of quality of service, since the download and upload speed at any given time depends on multiple factors, including: the speeds supported by the terminal equipment used; the amount of traffic being coursed in the area where the service is used; the coverage and topography in that area or location; use inside buildings; the number of simultaneous users; increased latency resulting from the distance between countries; the number of applications simultaneously running on the user's terminal equipment (firewall, antivirus, peer-to-peer applications, other sessions or applications competing with the internet session, etc.); the operating system and hardware and/or software configuration of the user's terminal equipment; the characteristics of the servers used and the capacity of the networks that interconnect these servers to the Internet; the capacity and/or availability of the networks of the partners of roaming and the international transit networks used, as well as the QoS control policies applied by these networks, which may result in service degradation at roaming, among other factors beyond MEO's control.

Estimating the maximum Internet access speed (in Mbps) at Roaming and for mobile accesses also depends on the factors listed above at any given time.

For more information on internet access speeds, see the Influencing factors Terms of Use.

How does Roaming work in the European Economic Area (EEA)?

Roaming in the European Economic Area (EEA)
Roaming in the European Economic Area (EEA) is simple and costs the same as in Portugal. The EEA includes: the entire European Union, the French Caribbean, Réunion, Gibraltar, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Although the United Kingdom no longer belongs to the European Union, the same EEA roaming conditions still apply.
If your MEO plan includes voice and/or text calls to other national networks, the communications you make while roaming to Portugal or to EEA countries and the United Kingdom will be deducted from your free allowance.

Please note that Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland are not European Economic Area countries. In these countries thebasic roaming plan will apply, according to the zone to which the respective countries belong, unless you choose to activate a Roaming bundle for these destinations.
If you're aMEO Empresas customer , check out the basic roamingplan .
Communications on boats, airplanes and satellites are also not included in the European Economic Area.

Outside the European Economic Area, we recommend that you activate a Roaming bundle . If you don't want to use data, you can:
  1. Disable data roaming on your device;
  2. Change the roaming data limit link to FAQ Controlling data charges and other Roaming communications
  3. Opt out of roaming service on boats, planes and satellites FAQ link Use data service (internet) abroad

Using the internet while Roaming
Mobile Net traffic carried out in EEA countries and the United Kingdom is deducted from the cap you have in Portugal. However, it may be subject to an Acceptable Use Policy (PUR). If this policy applies to your plan , you will be notified by text when you reach 80% and 100% of the PUR data volume. Once the PUR is exhausted, the traffic consumed will continue to be deducted from your national ceiling, plus an amount per MB (see the conditions for MEO customers or MEO Empresas).

Check the conditions of your national plan on the my MEO App or website.

Calls, text and MMS not included in the cap made to EEA countries and the United Kingdom will be charged as for other national networks (the same as in Portugal).

Communications not included
  • Communications made to other countries outside the EEA and the UK (see the plan for MEO customers and for customers MEO Empresas)
  • Calls and text to Value Added and Premium numbers and to numbers on the satellite network (see the plan for MEO customers and MEO Empresascustomers )
  • Communications on ship and aircraft networks. The basic roaming plan for zone 4 will apply to these networks (see the plan for MEO customers and MEO Empresas customers ).
  • Calls made to support lines to customer and special national numbers (non-geographic services) are billed at the price of voice communications outside the national usage allowance of your plan.

Consult free of charge the information on Value Added Numbers, Access to Emergency Services and Public Alert Systems in the European Economic Area. This information is based on the content of public databases created and maintained by BEREC (Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications), based on data provided by the National Regulatory Authorities and/or Other Competent Authorities of each country in the European Economic Area.

Other roaming
If you have subscribed to another roaming plan, the respective conditions apply.

Roaming prevalence in the European Economic Area (EEA)
MEO can monitor roaming consumption for at least 4 months to check that roaming traffic and presence in the EEA and UK prevail, i.e. are higher than traffic and presence in Portugal and other countries outside the EEA and UK (>50%).
If this pattern continues after 2 weeks, MEO is entitled to charge a surcharge for traffic roaming in the EU, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and the United Kingdom, in accordance with the Responsible Use Policy (RUP). ForMEO Empresas customers , see the conditions.

Find out all the information about RoamingIf you are a MEO customer, call Customer Support (see tariff) if you are in Portugal, or call free +351 961 000 083 if you are in one of the EEA countries. If you are aMEO Empresas customer , use the MEO Empresas Helpline (see tariff).
