Using internet at home

  • What is MEO Smart WiFi?

MEO Smart WiFi is a a unique and smart Wi-Fi network, available at Fibre with FiberGateway and Fiber X routers, which replaces the previous 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz networks.

Devices now connect to a single Wi-Fi network, and the router automatically selects the best network for each device, ensuring the best coverage and speed at all times.

Learn how to activate MEO Smart WiFi.

  • How to interpret WiFi measurements

Home Wi-Fi networks are supported by devices that comply with a set of Wi-Fi standards generically referred to as IEEE 802.11.

Generally speaking, all laptops, smartphones, Smart TVand other communication devices come from the factory enabled to communicate with wireless networks using the Wi-Fi 802.11 standard.
The main standards in the IEEE 802.11 standard are:
    • IEEE 802.11: Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz frequency band with a theoretical maximum capacity of 2 Mbp

    • IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi 1): Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz frequency band with a maximum theoretical data rate of 11 Mbps

    • IEEE 802.11a (Wi-Fi 2): Wi-Fi standard for the 5 GHz frequency band with a theoretical maximum data rate of 54 Mbps
    • IEEE 802.11g (Wi-Fi 3): Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz frequency band with a theoretical maximum data rate of 54 Mbps

    • IEEE 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4): A Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies with a theoretical maximum data rate of 150 to 600 Mbps. This standard uses MIMO-OFDM as its transmission method.

    • IEEE 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5): A Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands with a maximum theoretical data rate of 1.7 Gbps.

    • IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6): Wi-Fi standard for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies with a theoretical maximum capacity of 9.6Gbps.

    • IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7): Wi-Fi standard for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and 6 GHz frequencies with a theoretical maximum capacity of 40Gbps.

Networks operating at 5 GHz and 6 GHz typically experience lower levels of interference because there is less equipment operating at those frequencies.

The actual speed on Wi-Fi networks is always lower than the physical speed, due not only to data encapsulation and other functions, but also to the distance between devices, the presence of obstacles (walls, glass, cabinets, people), neighboring networks, interference, and other radio-emitting devices.

Speed-measuring tools on mobile devices (tablets, smartphones) measure actual Wi-Fi speeds and are available at www.meo.pt/speedtest.

  • Visible Wi-Fi Networks at Home – 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, MEO Smart WiFi

In Fibre accesses, depending on the router model, you may have one of these private WiFi network configurations:

    - 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network visible on older routers

    - 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks visible (on TG789vac v2 routers and FiberGateway routers without MEO Smart WiFi active)

    • The 2.4GHz band has a longer range, so it is advisable to use it when you are further away from the router.

    • The 5 GHz bandallowsforfast browsing with less interference, but it has a shorter range, so it provides a better user experience when you’re close to the router. Access to this band also depends on your devices (smartphone, PC, tablet, and others).

-MEO Smart WiFi (available on FiberGateway and Fiber X routers)

MEO Smart WiFi combines the advantages of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz networks in a single smart network, with a single name and password. There's no need to choose a WiFi network as the router automatically manages the best band (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz) for each device, ensuring the best coverage and speed at all times.

The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands allow for faster browsing and less interference, but have a shorter range. The 6 GHz band is only available on the FiberGateway WiFi 7 and Fiber X7 routers. Access to this band depends on the protocols supported by your equipment (Smartphone, PC, Tablet, Smart TV, among others).

  • How to Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

To connect to a Wi-Fi network, you need to enter the network name and password.

Several available Wi-Fi networks may appear, including MEO WiFi. This is an open network, intended for use outside your home and at locations with hotspot WiFi hotspot .

At home, you should use private Wi-Fi networks, which are typically named something like: MEO-xxxxx or MEO-xxxxx-5G for the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz networks, respectively, or simply MEO-xxxxx if you have Smart WiFi enabled.

Check the name and password for your home or business Wi-Fi networks, or customize this information in the following sections at customer:

    • App my MEO >Services > Landline > Wi-Fi Password under Features > Select the network > View or changeyour login information

    • customer Areamy MEO > Services > Landline > View and Manage Wi-Fi Access >View or changeyour access information for the desired network

    • Business- customer s (Large Companies)

    • TV, under Menu > customer > my MEO > Internet. The original information is also available on the sticker located on the bottom of the router.

If you have a FiberGateway or Fiber X router, manage your private Wi-Fi network in the MEO Home app.

If you need help, consult the step-by-step guide on how to connect to a wireless network by selecting the operating system of the device(s) you want to connect:

    - Android and iOS

If there are two visible Wi-Fi networks, you must repeat the connection process for each one on each of your devices (smartphone, PC, tablet, etc.) in order to connect to both.

If you have Smart WiFi enabled, you no longer need to select a Wi-Fi network, since the router automatically determines the best band (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz) for each device, ensuring the best coverage and speed at all times.

  • How Speedtest can improve my internet experience

Speedtest is an essential tool for optimizing your online experience. By running regular tests, you can measure your internet speed, identify potential performance issues, and fine-tune your connection to achieve optimal speeds. Be sure to run Speedtest periodically to ensure smooth browsing and a fast connection.
  • How to measure internet speed with Speedtest Ookla

Before running an internet speed test with Speedtest,we recommend the following:

    • The computer must be connected to the router via cable

    • There are no open programmes or updates running

    • There are no more users using the access at the moment

    • The smartphone or tablet are not updating applications in the background

    • No device is connected to home broadband

    • There are no recordings currently in progress on the MEOBOX; simply turning off the TV isn't enough

    • If the connection is Wi-Fi, you should make sure that the test device is connected to the higher frequency network (5 GHz or 6 GHz) and position yourself about 2 meters from the router without obstacles to get the maximum speed with that test device. You can take measurements elsewhere in the house to check if the Wi-Fi coverage is what you need. If not, we recommend installing a MEO Smart WiFi extender.

    • Use the latest equipment possible. Older equipment has features that prevent you from getting better speeds

    1. Click the link for the speed test

In just a few seconds, you'll have the results of your internet speed.

    2. If your connection speed is high, you'll get more accurate results by using theCLI (Command Line Interface)appinsteadof a browser.

Here'show to interpret the speed test results.

If your speed test results aren't what you expected, learn about thefactors that can influence them.

  • What Is the Speedtest Internet Speed Test and How to Interpret the Results

The MEO Internet Speed Testis a service for measuring Internet speeds, available on MEO' customers s and supported on the Ookla platform.

By choosing Ookla as a partner, we guarantee that the tests are exempt, measured by anindependent and autonomous international reference body.

    How the test works:

The application searches for the fastest MEO server near your location. This ensures that the results are highly accurate, as the data transmitted will travel a shorter distance to the server.

The data shown in Speedtest is:

    • Ping (Packet InterNet Grouper) is the command that allows you to measure in milliseconds (ms) the time it takes for a bundle of information to go from the device to a destination and back again. The faster it goes and comes back, the faster the internet connection you are using.

    • Download speed is the speed at which a file (archive) is downloaded, for example when you save an image from a website to your device. It influences how fast you can browse websites, how long it takes to transfer files from the internet and the quality of videos and music downloaded in real time (streaming).

    • Upload speed is the speed at which a file is sent to the Internet, for example when you send a photo by email or in a Facebook chat. It influences the speed of sending emails with attached files, posting videos and photos on social networks, the speed of backing up content to the cloud, the quality of video calls or conferences on VoIP systems and a good online gaming experience.

Download and upload speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

  • What is Wi-Fi 6 and what are its advantages?

It's the Wi-Fi standard, known as 802.11ax, which brings a better wireless network experience to the home.

Compared to previous Wi-Fi standards, it allows you to have:

    • More devices connected simultaneously at maximum speed, even in devices not compatible with this standard

    • Better energy management capacity and, consequently, lower consumption

    • Greater security.

The advantages of FibreGateway WiFi 6 apply to all wirelessly connected devices, even if they are not compatible with this standard.

  • How can I get FiberGateway WiFi 6?

When you subscribe to a MEO fibre bundle with a broadband service, check that the option you have chosen already includes this router. If it includes another router, indicate that you want the FibreGateway WiFi 6 model, and the €2.99/month will be added to the price of the selected MEO bundle.

If you are already customer a MEO Fibre customer with a fixed internet service and have another router, you can request to replace it with the FiberGateway WiFi 6 through the support lines (see the plan), orthe MEO Empresas Support Line(see plan), subject to payment of the technician’s service call fee (€50, VAT included) and an additional charge of €2.99/month (VAT included) added to your MEO bundle .
