The pandemic that affected the health of global society also impacted the health of the oceans.
The waste resulting from Covid-19 led us to raise our voices against the things that no one wants to see in the sea.
This was an "Open Call" for all shapers to submit their designs for surfboards made from waste generated by Covid-19.

The Unwanted Shapes Edition 2019

The Unwanted Shapes

Every year, each of us produces more than 30 kg of plastic waste. If nothing changes, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. Portugal is one of the worst affected as it has a maritime territory 40 times larger than its land area.

"The Unwanted Shapes" is a project that aims to inspire society to overcome the problem of plastic consumption, through those who have a strong connection with the sea - surfers.

MEO has taken the initiative to develop 5 surfboards made entirely from the plastic that a person produces at home. These boards were used by the best surfers on the planet at the World Tour event in Peniche.

Special heat - Beat the plastic

A different kind of heat, in which surfers don't compete against each other, sim all together, against plastic.

The best surfers in the world were at the MEO Rip Curl Pro in Peniche surfing for the same cause - Defeat Plastic - raising awareness about the excess plastic we consume and discard on a daily basis.

In addition to the innovative competitive format, the surfers took to the water with "The Unwanted Shapes" showing that their talent is not limited to conventional shapes.

Defeat plastic

Each of us has an important role to play in reducing the amount of plastic that reaches the oceans.
Tips for "defeating" plastic.

What do you do to beat the plastic bag?

Every time I come back from surfing I pick up garbage from the beach. I always take a cloth bag for my shopping.

What do you do to beat the plastic cup?

What do you do to defeat the plastic box?

I take my own containers to take-away establishments.

The Unwanted Shapes

The board is made from a sandwich structure composed of a sheet of recycled EPS and household plastics. The uniformity of the shape is achieved by compacting the assembly, and the materials are bonded using epoxy resin with a component that improves adhesion between the various types of plastic.

The outer surface is coated with fibre 6oz glass, two layers on the deck and one on the bottom, leaving the final appearance the same as a conventional board.
