Frequently asked questions about roaming in the rest of the world

How do calls abroad from outside Europe work?

Making Roaming Calls

  • To call Portugal: Dial the + sign or 00 (zero zero) then the code 351 and finally the phone number or mobile phone. For example, if you are abroad and want to call 960 000 000, dial: +351 960 000 000. To call a Portuguese mobile phone from abroad, do it the same way. It's as if you were calling Portugal.
  • To call the country you are in: Dial + or 00 (zero zero), then the code of the country you are in and finally the number you want to call. For example, if you are in Spain and want to call the Madrid landline number 911 234 567, dial + 34 911 234 567.
  • To call another country: Dial + or 00 (zero zero) then the code of the country you want to call and finally the number you want to reach. For example, if you are in France and want to call the Spanish number 123 456 789, which has the international code 34, dial: +34 123 456 789.

Consult the international telephone codes.

Receiving calls while Roaming

  • Voice calls and multimedia messages (MMS) received while roaming are paid for according to the basic roamingplan for the respective zones. If you are aMEO Empresas customer , see the basic roamingplan
  • Anyone who wants to call you or send you messages dials your number as normal and pays the same as if they were in Portugal. If you don't answer or your mobile phone is switched off, you can leave a voice message, as long as you have the voice mail service active. Receiving voice mail messages abroad will cost you money.

Accessing voice mail while Roaming

Checking your voicemail while roaming is roaming free as it is in Portugal, as it counts as a call made to Portugal. In the EEA, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom, it will be deducted from your allowance or, if you do not have any minutes included in plan, the price of a call to other national networks will be applied.

In the rest of the world, this call will cost the same as a call to Portugal according to the Roamingplan . If you are aMEO Empresas customer , see the roamingplan .

Please note: Each voice message you receive on your Voice Mail costs two international calls, except in Zone 1 (European Union, including the French Caribbean, Reunion and Gibraltar, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom), where the service is free: one corresponds to the call being forwarded from the MEO exchange to the operator in the country where you are ( roaming call), the other corresponds to the call being forwarded to Voice Mail (call made to Portugal).

To access voice mail while roaming, dial 200 or +351 60 followed by your mobile phone number and press the call key.

To listen to your voicemail message, dial * and follow the voice prompts, which will ask you for your personal access code followed by # (unless you have changed it, your personal access code is the same as your SIM card’s PIN ). As a last resort (if all previous options fail), dial +351 96 2000000 and follow the voice prompts, which will ask for your mobile phone number mobile phone by your personal access code.

To deactivate voice mail when you're abroad, there are several ways you can do it before you travel. Do it through the menus on your mobile phone or by dialing one of these codes:

  • ##61# Call key - to cancel forwarding when you don't answer a call
  • ##62# Call key - to cancel forwarding when your mobile phone is switched off or has no reception
  • ##67# Call key - to cancel forwarding when your number is busy
  • ##002# Call key - to cancel the forwarding of all calls that you do not receive, for whatever reason.

For more information contact customer Support (see the plan), or, if you are aMEO Empresas customer , call the MEO Empresas Helpline (see the plan).

How do I use mobile data outside Europe?

With the roaming service, you can be abroad and use data on your mobile phone just like in Portugal. You can use email, the internet, apps and much more.

You will need to confirm that this function is active on your device. To do this, go to General Settings > Network > Roaming Data > Activate*.

If you have an internet traffic sharing card, you can use it abroad, the traffic used is billed to you according to your plan of Roaming.

To avoid incurring costs for software updates, we suggest that you check on your mobile phone that updates are only configured in WiFi mode:

  • Android: General Settings > Device Information > Software Update > More options > Automatic Update.
  • Apple: Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

(*) There may be slight variations depending on the device model and operating system version. If in doubt, check the information in the device manual or on the brand's website.

What happens when I'm in border areas outside the European Economic Area (EEA)?

In certain regions near the border with countries in zone 1 (EEA - European Economic Area, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom), your mobile phone data device may unwittingly register on a network in a country in a different zone, where the conditions that apply in Portugal do not apply.

Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland are not European Economic Area countries. In these countries the base roamingplan , according to the zone to which the respective countries belong, unless you choose to activate a roaming bundle for these destinations. Roamingbundle for these destinations.
If you are aMEO Empresas customer , check out the base roamingplan .

To avoid unwanted roaming consumption, follow these steps:

1. Check that you have active roaming . Here are some quick ways to do it:

  • a. See if you have received a text from your operator informing you that you are roaming
  • b. Confirm the name of the operator that appears in the top corner of the mobile phone screen.

2. Manually select the network

  • Android: Menu > Settings > Wireless and other > Mobile network > Operator > To select the manual network search, select the indicator to disable the function > Press "OK" to authorize the manual search > Select the desired operator > Press the home key and return to the start menu.
  • iOS*: Menu > Settings > Mobile network > Network selection > Deactivate "Automatic" > Select the operator you want > Press the home key and return to the start menu.

3. Alternatively, you can also deactivate the Roaming service temporarily in the App or my MEO website, if you are aMEO Empresas customer deactivate it in the MEO Empresas customer area. You can also call 12 083 (Portugal) or +351 961 000 083 (from abroad), free of charge.
