The new home of the Zoo's savannah species, such as elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus and niala.

Come and discover the MEO Savannah at Lisbon Zoo

Lisbon Zoo

Savana MEO

MEO has joined forces with the Zoo to create a space for some of the savanna species that inhabit the Zoo, paying particular tribute to the African savanna elephant and reinforcing the importance of habitat preservation in species conservation. In the MEO Savanna, it is also possible to observe giraffes, hippos, and nialas.

Free sunscreen for everyone

MEO, the MEO Foundation, and Garnier Ambre Solaire are raising awareness about responsible sun exposure at the Lisbon Zoo by providing free sunscreen during the hottest months of the year.

The dispensers will be located in the entrance area, next to the lockers, and at Savana MEO. This initiative aims to protect the health of all visitors while reducing waste from lotion and plastic, transforming a single-use product into a service accessible to everyone, in compliance with safety and hygiene standards and with respect for the environment.

Welcome to the MEO Savannah

Nature as inspiration

3x more space

With more space, it was possible to improve the welfare of the species. Of particular note are the elevated structures where the elephants' food is placed, allowing them to exercise their trunk muscles.

Similarity to the African savannah

Dull shadows and sparse vegetation try to reproduce the scattered plant mass of the savannah.

More water points

More water points to create a unique atmosphere.

Naturalistic delimitations

Stone is the natural element used to delimit different spaces.

Improved animal welfare

Different ground covers (such as clay, earth, pine bark) stimulate their exploratory instincts.

The African Savannah Elephant is the symbol of the MEO Savannah

With the sharp decline in the wild population, its conservation status has worsened and it is now classified as "Endangered". Its conservation is urgent.
