MEO has been focusing on expanding its mobile network in the Madeira archipelago, investing in 5G and 4G infrastructures. The operator says it has almost 100% population coverage for 4G and 85% for the 5G network.
The figures were pointed out by the Umlaut audit, published in the "Audit Report, Portugal, Funchal - 2024", which highlights the quality of the services offered. The study analyzed the offer of the three main national telecommunications operators (MEO, Vodafone and NOS) offering the service in Funchal.
MEO's mobile network obtained the highest score, registering 956 points out of 1,000. Voice services performed best, scoring 263 points out of a possible 270. And in terms of crowdsourced quality, MEO scored 234 points out of 250.
To carry out the test, Umlaut measured the performance of voice and data services on smartphones between the available networks. The tests were carried out in September 2024 and the data was obtained by traveling 450 kilometers through the city.
MEO won the"Best Mobile Coverage" award in Portugal from Ookla, according to Speedtest Intelligence data for the first and second quarter of 2024. The operator obtained a score of 77.19%, according to the Coverage Scores - coverage metrics that describe the actual experience of using this network and the spatial extent of the verified coverage.
